The First Tomato

The green slowly gave way to a light redness
Seeming to rise from the inside
Pushing itself onto the surface
Melding into the texture of the skin.

After 73 days (give or take)
The first tomato was ready to harvest
Or better put
The first tomato was ripe for the picking.

The day was well chosen as proper as could be
The last day of sloshim for Mary Fellman
Who told stories of of her life as a child
Eating tomatoes on her porch like apples, but with salt.

So just as the life of a tomato has its course
So has the life of every living things
And what will push itself to our surfaces
Melding itself with the essence of who we are

I don't know the answer
But the growth season is exciting.
